The Championship Races will start at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 3rd at the Tailwaters of Brookville Lake. This race is intended for both intermediate and skilled paddlers.
The route is 8.4 miles from Brookville to Cedar Grove, with some Class 2 and Class 1 rapids. The trip entails beautiful scenery on the entire length of the course. Previous years competitors will know this race as the "USCA Rules Race" Canoefest races will be held under slight modification of USCA Rules in 2010, in hopes of widening the field and creating a very competitive race. More on the rule changes later. That said, obviously:
These
races are not USCA points races.
Racers
in traditonal C-2 Standard and C-2 Aluminum Races compete for the ultimate
prize, the Travelling Trophy,
with winners engraved back to 1963. Top 2008 winners will have their
names engraved the Trophy, and will get to hold it for one year.
The Trophy was created by Brookville legend Al Brown, who played
a big role in the original canoe races.
Pictured at right is 3-time Olympian Roland Muhlen, a multiple winner of the trophy, here with Alan Deckeback in 1966.
And in 2006, here is Roland and his wife Linda, the 2006 C-2 Mixed Class champions. They accepted the Trophy in 2006 on behalf of the Overall Winners Ray Bauer and Bob Ackemyer.
The
Trophy has undergone some changes, a new canoe on its top, and a new
base which makes it, we believe, the largest canoe race trophy in the
world. it is a legendary piece of canoe memorabilia, and continues its
long history each year in the modern Canoefest races.
Awards will available to winners as soon as results are confirmed, with the exception of the grand prize, the Travelling Trophy, which will be awarded at the Awards Ceremony. Those wishing to receive their award early in the afternoon may do so.
There will be an official awards ceremony at 7pm for those who wish to receive their awards on stage, the presentation of the Travelling Trophy, and to those who wish to receive wild raucous applause from the Canoefest crowd. The awards ceremony is presided over by the Canoe Princess and her Court. Those winners who are not in attendance will still have their name(s) announced at the Awards Ceremony.
